Involvement

Collaborated closely with the overseas base development team to design widgets according to their technical specifications. Since functionality was entirely dependent on the Android platform, any design deviation had to be carefully evaluated for feasibility. Most widgets were created in five responsive sizes to support layouts ranging from one to five columns.
The widget set included international weather, quick settings, digital clock with alarm, media player, ‘At a Glance,’ timer, and more. While most icons followed Android’s Material Design system, I created the custom weather icons specifically for this project.

Insight

This video showcases my Figma working file for the Android widget project. Designing widgets for an Android-based smartphone was a new challenge for both the team and me. These widgets were developed as default features across all HMD smartphones, requiring close collaboration with engineering teams in China and Taiwan.

The designs had to function seamlessly across multiple grid sizes, support both light and dark modes, and align with HMD’s brand guidelines while meeting Android platform requirements. The result was a flexible, scalable widget system that delivered a consistent user experience across devices.
